FDIC-Insured - Backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Government

Community first for two centuries.

Times change. What matters hasn't.

We’ve been part of your communities since 1825. In that time, we’ve seen a lot of change. But what hasn't changed are the connections that bring us closer.

For 200 years, we’ve focused on spreading kindness in our communities. From helping small businesses thrive, supporting organizations in need, lending a hand, and guiding our banking customers with kindness. All helping to ensure our communities continue to thrive for the next 200 years.

200 Years. 200+ Acts of Kindness.

We're celebrating by giving back. See how we're spreading kindness in your community.

Our Story

We go way back. But we never stop moving forward.

In May 1824, the Connecticut General Assembly granted a charter to the Middletown Savings Bank, which would later become Liberty Bank. It was the third bank chartered by the state of Connecticut and was among the first few mutual savings banks in the United States at that time.

In July of that year, the bank opened for business at the Samuel Southmayd pharmacy located on the corner of Main and William Streets in Middletown. Joseph Coe made the first deposit of $200.

Liberty Bank has withstood World Wars, the Great Depression, deep recessions, changes in government, and global pandemics, among other obstacles.  Now, 200 years later, we are the fifth oldest bank in the country. We remain owned by our customers, not outside shareholders - just as our founders would want us to be.

While the way you bank with Liberty Bank of today is far different from the wooden cupboard that held our customers' very first deposits, we are certain Samuel Southmayd and our founders had the same mission in mind that we still live each day: to improve the lives of our customers, teammates and communities for generations to come.

Volunteerism

We keep the community in mind with everything we do, in and out of the bank. By providing volunteers to nonprofits, schools and civic groups, we support the organizations our neighbors depend on. Just let us know a few specifics and we'll see how we can lend a helping hand.
